Motivation – how to do it

January8

Yesterday I talked about Daniel Pink’s book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us. I think it is so important that I wanted to devote a 2nd post to it.

This video is a talk that Dan gave at TED in May of 2009 on some of the concepts at are in the book. The material is priceless and will give you a taste of what he does in the book. The presentation is also done amazingly well – notice how as he makes a big deal about how he’s not telling a story that he weaves amazing stories. Watch this right now! you’ll be glad you did. (I know I’m jumping up and down about this, but I really am that excited by it!)

I love the distinction between linear tasks and creative solutions. Different sorts of problems require different approaches.

This is exciting stuff. Steve and I always talk about when we have a full staff, how we will treat our employees. What he presents here gives me a lot to think about.

(And this whole thing shows the lie to needing big executive pay packages to attract “good executives”. – Just saying.)

Geoff – I totally agree on all counts!

Pick up the book – I think you’ll really enjoy it!

But my “to read’ stack is already so high! Yes, I’d planned on picking it up soon. I’ve got to get through the second and third volume of Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle first.
